TALA ‘AL BADRU ‘ALAYNA
Synopsis
Ṭala ‘al Badru ‘Alayna is a song which is over 1400 years old and was originally sung to welcome the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the year 622CE, when he arrived in Madinah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was seeking refuge from the oppressive conditions and plots to kill him in his native city of Mecca. As the Holy Prophet ﷺ fled Mecca by night, his persecutors sent assassins to find and kill him, whilst his companions waited for his arrival in great anticipation in Madinah - they were fully aware of the threat and danger to the Prophet ﷺ.
You can imagine the excitement and delight when the Prophet ﷺ was spotted coming from the distant valley of Wadaa. It is with the same excitement that Muslims all over the globe still sing this song. The original composition is only four lines long, and it is known and sung by Muslims, young and old, all over the world.
The invitation and the warm reception of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ by the people of Madinah brought peace to the community from ruinous tribal warfare. The Charter of Madinah was agreed by all the tribes and led to the formation a multi-religious state of Madinah.
